In a late September 2021 news release, OSHA announced it will implement an enforcement initiative on heat-related hazards by developing a National Emphasis Program on Heat Inspections.  Their new intervention and enforcement intuitive will prioritize heat-related inspection activities when the heat index exceeds 80 degrees Fahrenheit for both indoor and outdoor worksites.  This initiative will apply to construction, agricultural maritime and general industry sectors.

The expectation is that employers will train employees and ensure proper rest, hydration cooling and or shade is planned for the work assignments.  Further it is anticipated that employers will take periodic measurements to determine workforce heat exposures and train employees on recognizing common symptoms of heat stress or related illness is occurring.

OSHA anticipates an October 2021 advance notice of the proposed rulemaking and a 2022 release of a national emphasis program.
