
Safety Leadership: Do You Have a Plan?

Safety leadership, in its simplest form, may be defined as leading your organization, which includes your employees and customers, to a condition of being protected from harm.
Safety is the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. It may also be defined as the quality of averting or not causing danger or loss.
Leadership can be narrowly defined as the action of leading a group of people or organization.
From a broad perspective, good safety leadership depends on the organization having a defined set of operating guidelines that are carried out by frontline employees and supervisors.
Additionally, there may be mid-level managers that monitor and adjust the procedures to help steer the process. Overall, this may look something like:

Leaders are often perceived as a rank, title, or position within the organization. However, safety leadership is not defined by such perceived limitations. Safety leaders may be anyone in the organization, regardless of title or position, who cares about the safety of their coworkers, customers and the public. Beyond caring, safety leaders will take action to ensure the safety of themselves and others rather than be a passive witness to injury.
